Hardy blogs that State Rep. Earl Jones supports the payday lending industry and that Afrique Kilimanjaro (note: I know here from way back) wrote in the Carolina Peacemaker that first Jones said rationalized the existence of this industry and then denied receiving money from them. Later, when Afrique listed campaign contributions Jones received from payday lenders, Jones changed his tune.
“There was a misunderstanding. I never intended to indicate that I did not receive contributions from the payday lending industry. I thought I was asked if I had a financial interest or was affiliated with the payday lending industry. I’m proud of the donations the payday lenders gave me and I look forward to receiving them again and from anyone else who wishes to donate to my campaign.”
Obviously Jones didn’t read what Julian Bond had to say.
And Skip Alston? Here’s his uncharacteristically quiet crit: He “…[h]opes Jones would agree with the organization’s stance that payday lending is detrimental to the black community.” And if Jones were white?

Earl Jones… friend of the poor
Our unrepentant State Representative Earl Jones continues to
Alston is uncharacteristically quiet because Julian Bond jerked a knot in him on this subject.
Sue,
I didn’t include a note in my original post about once having known Afrique also.
I’ve made a separate post.
Thanks for your help getting the word out!
And hope you’ve had a great weekend!
