Thanks to a private emailer who can out himself if he chooses, we have a theme for ConvergeSouth 2008 and although a I can foretell those Mac users who will disdain it (some of my best friends…) and I’m giving serious thought to buying a Macbook when the Apple store opens here in Greensboro, his suggestions are a universally-understood set of terms. (Listen for the drumroll.) Imagine the graphic ripping off we can do!
Start –> Programs (blogging platforms, video sharing…)
Start –> Connect (community building, social networks…)
Start –> Help and Support (how-to sessions, blogging 101 and 102…)
I think I like it. I know I like it. What I like even more is that it’s community suggested.
Updatingly, we have a brand-new ConvergeSouth event to announce soon, some sponsors signed on (checks are in the mail), grant requests filed, lots of coordinating with BlogHer, panelists and presenters to nail down (many “tentatives” in the inbox) and — hey, Hogg! are you up for another BBQ for a few hundred folks at your place this year?
*chokes himself to death*
Figured you’d be first but where’s the theme YOU suggested?
Ed Cone takes the stage at ConvergeSouth 2008:
“Welcome to ConvergeSouth. We’re going to get started now. Cancel or Allow?”
Audience looks around at each other. Mumbles “Allow”.
“Great. I’d like to present our first speaker, who’s going to give a great talk on video sharing. Cancel or Allow?”
“Allow!” shouts the audience.
Speaker takes the stage and introduces himself.
“Hey everyone! This is a great topic, and I can’t wait to get started. But first, you’ll need to install your Audience Participation Driver, version 2.1.236, then leave the conference hall, then come back in…”
Etc. ;)
Pretty cute, Anthony. But if you click that little option, you can turn off all that allowing. However, where’s YOUR suggestion for a theme? (tapping my foot, waiting)
I like the theme (yeah, shoot me). I’m not enthusiastic that the days are a Thursday and Friday. For a host of reasons, Saturday has been the meat & potatoes of ConvergeSouth. Not sure why CS had to take a back seat to BlogHer.
Heh. If we’re going to go with computer themes, I’d rather do…
PC: Hi. I’m a PC.
Mac: Hey PC, I’m a Mac.
CS: Hey both of you guys… I’m CS.
PC/Mac: Who the hell are you???!!
CS: You know…. I work for your boss, the Internet. The guy that you guys have to stay all compatible with? Think of me as the guy he calls in to make sure you guys play nice together.
PC: Who the heck are you to tell me what to… (BSOD)
Mac: That’s right! Safari pow… (thinking circle)
CS: My job here is done.
Cheesy? Oh yeah. But it sure beats Start buttons. If we’re going to do that, I’d rather have directory structures within a file system. Which technically ties both Windows, Mac and linux together.
“The path that binds us all” type of thing. heh.
Start buttons. bah. *chokes himself to death again*
On second thought… I like Anthony’s better.
Why can’t we do something like…
” Soapbox empowerment. Empowering the little guy with a soapbox. When we all want to be the little guy.”
Roch, not to worry. We’re not taking a back seat (we always alternate 1- and 2-day conferences and this is a 1-day year). Explaining: please give us a couple weeks to nail down a particular sponsor. The Thursday event is special; not a regular conference day. It will be by reservation only (still free, see “sponsor” above) and will actually interest a large but particular group. It’s something new we’re trying; should be fun. In addition, we might move hosted dinners to Thursday night (not sure yet) and add a few nighttime treats (am working on it).
Thursday is not a full-day conference. We won’t be at A&T at all. Most of the stuff happens at night except for the way cool afternoon stuff that I can’t specify just yet. Please understand that sponsor thing. Better we have the dates announced than wait for the check in the mail :)
DM: Well, directory structures are a just FINE theme suggestion (which you had done that a few weeks ago) but I’ve learned that people rarely do that so I sorta kinda announced one because that always gets people antagonized enough to suggest. Thanks for playing. We have wonderful parting gifts for you. [smooch]
Susan and I have the perfect moderator for “help and support.”
Depending on if it’s Hillary or Barack, maybe the ‘other’ one will moderate. Ya think? I hear that Huckabee’s available.
