True story. Last names have been removed from the relatives of my friend who sends this story from his cousin.

Many of you may remember that 11 years ago, the same week that I had cancer surgery, a girl who my son had dated was killed in a car crash. Her name was Lindsey. She went to his high school, and was a year old than him. When she was a senior (and he was a junior), she asked him to be her date for senior prom. Then she went off to the Univ. of Texas in Austin. Two months later, she was killed in a car crash; in a car driven by her roommate, Evelyn Mezzich, who was legally intoxicated at the time. Another girl in the car was paralyzed. Of course, Evelyn escaped the crash with hardly a scratch.

My son was actually due to go to Austin that weekend; I think it might have been my impending surgery that stopped him.

At any rate, Evelyn, who was to be tried on intoxicated manslaughter charges, fled the country with her parents, to Peru, where they are a prominent and wealthy family. She was recently was found by an investigative reporter through her MySpace site, where she incredibly listed drinking as one of her favorite activities, and showed a spoof video by a Paris-Hilton look-alike singing about driving drunk and causing collisions! A congressman got involved, and extradition papers are being drawn up.

Lindsey’s mother called me yesterday to tell me of this, and also to tell me that the story has hit national news in the past 2 weeks. Marilyn has appeared in newspaper articles around the country, radio shows, and will be on 20/20 this Friday nite, December 7.

Just wanted to let you know in case you’re interested in watching. Here is one of the articles from the Houston Chronicle newspaper and this page from ABC News and this one from CBS News.

This is a sad story. I hope that she is brought to justice.

Similar to the other day…there are cases where justice is not served and it is damn sad.
